Core Connectivity Terms

Bandwidth

Ethernet

Network Configuration Terms

  • IP Address: A numerical label assigned to every device on a network. Your router holds a public IP address (visible to the internet) and assigns private IP addresses to each device inside your home.
  • DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol): The system your router uses to automatically assign private IP addresses to your devices. Without it, you'd need to configure each device manually.
  • NAT (Network Address Translation): A method that lets all your home devices share one public IP address. Your router translates outgoing requests so responses come back to the correct device. Most home routers use NAT by default.
  • DNS (Domain Name System): The internet's address book. When you type a website name, DNS translates it into the numeric IP address computers actually use to find each other. Slow or misconfigured DNS can make browsing feel sluggish even when your connection speed is fine.
  • Firewall: A security filter — built into most home routers — that blocks unauthorized incoming traffic while letting your permitted outgoing traffic pass freely.

  • WPA2 / WPA3: Security protocols that encrypt data sent over your Wi-Fi. WPA3 is the current standard; WPA2 is still widely used. Using no password (an open network) means anyone nearby can intercept your traffic.

Your Wi-Fi Name Doesn't Have to Be Your Network's ID

Many people leave their router's default SSID unchanged — something like 'Netgear_5G' or 'XFINITY_2G'. Changing your SSID to something recognisable (but not personally identifying) makes it easier to connect the right network in buildings with many signals. Avoid using your name, address, or apartment number as your SSID. Regardless of the name you choose, always enable a strong password using WPA2 or WPA3 encryption.
